1947 - 2007
Amitabha Chakrabarti, the 1971 Batch, Indian Information Service Officer, during his 35 year career, held several important assignments in various media units. He served as Prasar Bharati Correspondent in Washington and was later Additional DG (News) in Doordarshan. He also held important portfolio of spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence besides holding the post of Director, Research, Reference and Training Division. He assumed the office of Press Registrar of India in 2006 following his elevation to the Additional Secretary level.
His interview with President George Bush in February 2006 was one of the highlights of his professional career. He was interviewed by VOA (Voice of America) on that particular interview [1]
He died on 24th February 2007 while serving as the The Registrar General of Newspapers of India in Varanasi due to massive heart attack, where he had gone to deliver a lecture at the Benaras Hindu University.[2] [3]
