Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT, دانشگاه صنعتی امیرکبیر), formerly named Tehran Polytechnic, is a public, coeducational research university located in Tehran, Iran. AUT is the first established technical university in Iran (It is referred to as "The Mother of Engineering Universities") and known as the best science, engineering and technology school in the country. AUT has also the first rank for industry related activities in Iran.
AUT was founded by Habib Nafisi in 1958 and began activities with 5 engineering departments. With the expansion of the university, now it has fifteen science and engineering departments, and two other affiliated centers, located in Bandar Abbas and Mahshahr[1]. AUT enjoys the co-operation of about 480 full-time academic staffs and 550 administrative employees with an overall number of 9100 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. AUT has the highest ratio of the number of academic staff to the number of students among all other universities within the country. The university's executive branch consists of four departments which enjoy the active participation of various councils in planning and administering their strategic affairs.
AUT has also been designated as a Center of Excellence (قطب علمی) by Iran's Ministry of Science and Technology in the fields of Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Textile Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The Department of Computer and Information Technology is also nominated for such honor.
AUT has established educational and research collaboration with international universities and based on its high quality performance was able to sign mutual agreements for joint scientific activities with well-known universities. The collaboration program between this university and the University of Birmingham is a new international program of Amirkabir University of Technology.[2]
Also, AUT is one of leading universities in E-Learning systems in Iran which has begun its activities in this method since 2004.
