Aminjikarai (Amainda Karai) is one of the oldest localities in Chennai. It is located on the banks of the Cooum River. The arterial Poonamallee High Road runs through it. Arumbakkam and Anna Nagar were carved out of Aminjikarai in the '50s and '70s.

The early days known for suburb after tolgate (near Pachiappas Colege) Now it is central part of chennai which links Anna Nagar residential and Central busines district of chennai. It Gill Nagar, Railway Colony, Collectrate colony and Ayyavoo Naidu Colony. The residential rates of this market is sky rocketing to Rs.5000 Psqft to Rs.6000 Psqft which use to sell at Rs.5000 per Ground in 70's. Mehta nagar is connected by small pedesterian bridge and it is almost like an peninsula .
