Amherst is a village in Buffalo County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Kearney, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 277 at the 2000 census.

Amherst is located at 40°50′16″N, 99°16′10″W (40.837880, -99.269579)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 277 people, 110 households, and 81 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,262.6 people per square mile (486.1/km²). There were 117 housing units at an average density of 533.3/sq mi (205.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.92% White, 0.36% Native American, 0.36% Asian, and 0.36% from two or more races.

There were 110 households out of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.6% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% were non-families. 20.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $39,545, and the median income for a family was $41,875. Males had a median income of $28,333 versus $17,679 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,754. About 4.5% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.5% of those under the age of eighteen and 3.2% of those sixty five or over.
