Accidents, Not Punishments is a sermon by Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon. The sermon was given Sunday, September 8, 1861, at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, in Newington, London.
[edit] Background for the sermon
Spurgeon preached this message because of the two disasters hit close to his house. On Sunday, August 25, 1861, there was a tragic accident between two trains in the Clayton Tunnel between London and Brighton. It took 23 lives and severely injured hundreds.[1] About two weeks later, on Monday, September 2nd, another train wreck in North London claimed 15 more lives.
[edit] Sermon findings
On the death of missionary David Livingstone in 1873, a faded and much used copy of "Accidents, Not Punishments" was found among his few possessions later. There was also a handwritten comment at the top of the first page that said "Very good, D.L."[2] He had taken it with him in his travels in Africa, but it was later given back to Spurgeon and loved by him.
