[edit] History
Starting in 1951, Alvin A. Goldhush, a Long Island dentist, made superior quality dental cabinets and created the company Formed Laminates, Inc. in Lindenhurst, N.Y. Goldhush eventually gave up dentistry and devoted his time to the company, now named Raygold Corp. Raygold Corp acquired a wood processing plant in Moorefield, W.V. in 1957. This plant is still in operation today. Boise Cascade, at the time a conglomerate, acquired Raygold and moved the company from Long Island to Winchester, Virginia. Boise Cascade soon refocused toward forestry and wood products, ultimately focusing on paper. The executives of the cabinetry division recognized in 1979 that Boise Cascade would lose interest in the cabinetry division, and they therefore initiated a leveraged buyout. Bill Brandt, Al Graber, Jeff Holcomb, and Don Mathias completed the deal with Boise Cascade and formed American Woodmark Corporation in 1980.
[edit] Product Line
American Woodmark primarily builds kitchen and bathroom wall and base cabinets. Woodmark has over 200 combinations of cabinetry using four species of wood: oak, maple, hickory, and cherry. The cabinetry is marketed in 12 various lines, including a "Value Line" which contains three basic lines. American Woodmark features various styles of doors, on top of which they offer open doors, mullion doors, no door, or accent glass doors. Various functionality features, moldings, knobs, pulls, and trim accent pieces also exist. Additionally, Woodmark builds vanities, wall units, home offices, wet bars and more.
[edit] Sales
American Woodmark does no direct sales to customers. Customers purchase cabinetry from home centers such as Home Depot or Lowe's, the cabinets are then shipped from the assembly factory to the customer. The Home Depot and Lowe's accounts for more than 60% of Woodmark's business.
