The American University of Sulaimani in Iraq (AUIS) is a new addition to the American universities in the Middle East, opening its first classes in October 2007. It is located in the Kurdish city of Sulaimani in Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It is currently open to receive both undergraduate and graduate applications on a rolling admissions basis.
The AUIS is a non-profit institution of higher education following the American model of undergraduate and graduate education in the Middle East. AUI-S bases its educational methods and its academic and administrative organization on the American model for higher education. The university advances the ideals of both the liberal arts and a professional education that encourages critical and analytical thinking, strong problem solving methods and effective communication skills. Learning is enhanced by way of small, interactive classes and close student-faculty relationships. The language of instruction is English throughout.
AUI-S encourages the development of independent judgment, informed convictions, and lifelong commitments. The University calls all of its members to demonstrate personal integrity and embrace leadership and social responsibility in an increasingly interdependent and technological world.
Towards this end, as the first and only American University in Iraq, AUI-S will offer a broad range of disciplines from the sciences and humanities, with a focus on Economics, Management Science, Public and Business Administration, Political Science, and Computer and Information Sciences. AUI-S has a multi-national faculty and recruits its student body from all parts of Iraq and the Middle East region. The university anticipates admitting a maximum of 250 new students each academic year.
Tuition fees at the American University of Iraq in Sulaimani are $10,000 a year for undergraduate students.[1]. The university does, however, offer student scholarships to those in need of financial aid.
On August 22, 2007, the AUIS admitted its first student , a Kurdish graduate of Shourish High School (2007) in the program of Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and Policy Studies.[2]
