American Scholastics Competition Network

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

American Scholastics Competition Network (ASCN) was a high school quizbowl national championship tournament held annually in or near Chicago, Illinois. From 1987-2001, the tournament was held at Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois. From 2001-2005, the tournament was held at the Chicago-O'Hare International Airport Embassy Suites in Chicago, Illinois. ASCN is a non-profit organization based in Sioux City, Iowa. The tournament has been held annually since 1987, until 2006, when the tournament was unexpectedly canceled. The tournament's website at http://www.amschol.org has gone dead and there has been no evidence that a tournament was held in 2007.

At least three high schools have publicly claimed they have not received registration fee refunds from the canceled 2006 tournament. One of these three schools, Minden High School of Minden, Louisiana, had apparently not even been notified of the tournament's cancellation, setting the team back even more due to airfare and hotel room costs.

While legal action has been discussed, the small amounts each school was set back (in the range of $1,500 per school) have made it uneconomical for individual school districts to bring their legal weight to bear. In July 2007, the coach of a school in Michigan filed a complaint with the Sioux City, Iowa, police department.
