American Cruise Lines is a small ship cruise line based in the United States. The line operates three small ships along the Eastern Seaboard of the US, and has a fourth ship to be launched this year.
[edit] History
American Cruise Lines first operated in the early 1970s, when there was a boom in small-ship coastal cruising. They operated until going out of business in the 1980s.
In 2000, the same owner started the company back up again. He also owned the ship yard where the ships would be built. The first ship to be launched was the 49-passenger American Eagle, and was followed in 2002 by the same-sized American Glory. The American Spirit was launched in 2005 and held twice as many passenges. A fourth ship, American Star is set to be launched this year.
Recently, the line announced plans to form a sister line, Pearl Seas Cruises, to be based in Canada. It will have larger, more luxurious vessels and sail in Canada, the Caribbean, and Central America.
