[edit] Dictionary
I think http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Main_Page is used for this purpose and I believe you can link a page from the university page to the Wiktionary items. Runa
[edit] Userboxes
Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Userbox and find the categories that apply to you. The usual form of a userbox is two curly brackets followed by a code like SAR, followed by two closing brackets. Some are kind of silly though and you may want to read the page and talk page because some are being considered for deletion. Hope this helps! Arundhati Bakshi (talk) 13:04, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IIT Slang
Sure, I think it is fine to make this article. I would propose to create just one article for IIT Slang (all IITs together.) Most slang words are common among IITs (telling from personal experience), and for slangs specific to IITs we can have subsections. Go ahead, and I might add a few phrases sometime! deeptrivia (talk) 02:53, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
-
- PS: If you create a common article, we can say this slang is used by over 30,000 people, and is notable. I don't know what the reaction would be otherwise. deeptrivia (talk) 21:19, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
No, it's not fine. See WP:NFT. - UtherSRG (talk) 21:33, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
-
- Then why is it fine here?
[edit] Table of Contents
Try looking at this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page -- and in particular how to create a table. You use Wiki markup instead of regular HTML -- I have used it to create a table for my userboxes with braces and pipes (|) . . . this might be of use to you in creating a three column table to make your TOC more compact. If you need help designing it let me know, but you can just copy the table from my user page and change the userboxes to links in your article. You may also want to consider an alphabetical or topical index instead of indexing every word in the TOC. You can test your code out in your Sandbox. Arundhati_bakshi 13:57, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- I will try using the simple TOC template and section linmking to get this done. Might take some time though. See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Section#Compact_TOC for more information. Arundhati_bakshi
- I wasn't able to get the list working myself so asked for help from a more experienced user, Gflores -- he gave an example here, so we can work on that together if you like. On a more urgent note, UtherSRG has recommended that the article be deleted. To defend your article, you can go here and try to defend it. Arundhati_bakshi 20:57, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- I have finally got the list working if you need to look at the code for future reference: User:Arundhati_bakshi/Sandbox -- don't be disappointed by the decision to delete your work. I have had my stuff deleted as well. It's usually a holy war bewteen inclusionsists and deletionists if it isn't related to copyright.
[edit] Student Linguistics in IIT Kharagpur

[edit] Deletion
I will try to read up a bit more on how to interlink the various entries. I have only been here about half a year myself, so if you need help from a more experienced use, add the "helpme" tag at the top of your personal page . . . just enclose it in double curly brackets.
As for the deletion of the article, I hate to see all of that work go to waste, since it may be of use to some people (the jargon file seems similar, although older). The list in lengthy so although I would support a merge, I am not sure the deletionists would be likely to accept it, especially if it is something outside the range of their knowlege, which they usually consider to be irrelevant to everyone else.
Above all, don't let this scare you away. A number of my pages have been deleted before, one about a second after I had finished editing it! So just stick around and keep contributing. Above all, I wanted you to be given the right of defending your work, or allowing other to politely to tell you why what you added was not acceptable, rather than logging in one day and finding that it was just gone.
At Esperanza, we try to be more kindly and take a politer approach, especially with newcomers. not everyone feels this way however. Some of the genral pages that I follow when editing or creating articles are these guidelines:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_be_a_dick
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_bold
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Ignore_all_rules
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assume_good_faith
In other words, if in doubt, edit. If someone objects, you can have a discussion, which you will lose (since it will usually be an admin) and then you can move your data to your own space. To create a page in your own subspace just add domething like this:
User:Ambuj.saxena/Sandbox
and click on it and you can store it there for future use.
All the best, Arundhati bakshi 16:55, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] One Night @ the Call Center
Take a look at Wikipedia:Featured_articles#Literature. There are several articles about novels there. When including spoilers in an article, tag it in an appropriate place with {{spoiler}}. Check out The Brothers Karamazov for instance. As long as it's all written in your words, you're fine with copyrights. Do be aware of WP:NOT, primarily WP:NOT#Wikipedia_is_not_a_publisher_of_original_thought. Good luck! - UtherSRG (talk) 19:29, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Click on the "preferences" link at the top of the webpage and use the "Nickname" box. You can customize your signature as you like. If you want to include HTML that links to a different area or to use the FONT tag, click the "Raw" box so it will show up exactly as you specify as opposed to the default sig linking back to your userpage and talk page. - You can create a redirect page by starting the page with #REDIRECT [[pagename]] as contents.
- I was wondering myself about anything special happening when the number of articles approach 1 million. No idea.
- You can write a script that will count the number of edits with a particular summary (I'm not very good at it. But for that, all your welcomes should have the same edit summary (sth like "welcome" or whatever you choose.

[edit] Old MBM Hostel
Hello, Ambuj.saxena. With regard to your comment on my talk page,
- Hi, this is with regards to your suggested deletion of Old MBM Hostel because of non-notability. Unfortunately your viewpoint is unfounded as Old MBM Hostel is a hostel in Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. To have a look at the sample page that this article can be transformed into, you can have a look at my hostel's page, i.e. Rajendra Prasad Hall. Unfortunately I don't know anything special about the Hostel in concern so I can't edit it to some useful content. Neither do I know someone from that hostel as it houses management students, while I am an engineering student. So while the issue of notability isn't existant, I can assure you that there aren't people in that hostel motivated enough currently to edit the Wikipedia page. So it will remain in this state for some more time to come. And for God's sake, when you suggest an article for deletion, put it up for debate in AFD, not just put a tag. Otherwise how will it be debated.
I respond as follows:
- Procedurally, please refer to WP:PROD. The PROD tag is for uncontested deletions, so no discussion is supposed to take place. If you disagree with the deletion (as you apparently do), all you need to do is to remove the tag, as explained in the tag's box.
- In substance, it is not disputed that this student hall exists, but you do not put forth any argument why it is inclusion-worthy under WP:Notability (please see also WP:VAIN and in particular WP:BAI). Indeed, it seems to me that any student hall, including Rajendra Prasad Hall, is not notable unless there is something that distinguishes it from the many other student halls in the world, e.g. a notable alumnus, a special cultural significance, etc. For these reasons, I intend to nominate all such halls, e.g. Rajendra Prasad Hall, Old MBM Hostel Homi Jahangir Bhabha Hall, J C Bose Hall etc. for deletion on AfD, unless notability is established. Maybe it would be better to give all these halls a brief mention in the article on the university to which they belong. Best regards, Sandstein 21:58, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Try something like this: List of MIT dormitories. deeptrivia (talk) 01:11, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
With reference to Sandstein's comments above, I would first like to clarify that even I am against vanity articles. For example, yesterday itself I [deleted vanity information] from My Hostel's Page. There's also some of vanity information in IIT Kharagpur's Wikipedia Page and my school's page that I wanted to delete, but currently I am in the process of convincing others that this is the right way to do.
Now coming back to why I felt that WP:Notability is not a criteria to be applied here. IIT's are very famous institutions with a lot of notable alumni. Logically they would be from almost all the Halls concerned. So if the information about the notable alumnus and corresponding social life of students is added, the article can be considered as Notable. So until this point my view was: Weak Keep. However, after reading deeptrivia's observations, and going through List of MIT dormitories and List of Harvard dormitories, I feel that the same rule can be applied here also. So now, my viewpoint is: Strong Merge with List of IIT Kharagpur Halls. Dormitories in IIT Kharagpur are historically called Halls and I would prefer things remaining that way. Furthermore, this articles can have sub-sections where each Hall can be described in jist with a list of notable alumni. If agreed upon, I volunteer to do this merging myself. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 07:12, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
- I have no objection to what you propose, if there is enough information to make List of IIT Kharagpur Halls notable (and it is not immediately apparent why information on the social life of students would be notable, unless it is notably different from that of students the world over). In that case, it would probably be appropriate to redirect all halls listed under Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur thence (see also talk page. Sandstein 07:21, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
- Further of observations made by Sandstein, I propose to go even further that I believe should be acceptable to all. Here's what I propose:
- Create a new article titled Student Life in IIT Kharagpur (and put a link to it from IIT's Main Page in See Also Section) which will include the following things:
- The Student's Life section from IIT Kharagpur.
- The article on Chhedis from IIT Kharagpur. I really feel that this article doesn't deserve a place in IIT Kharagpur's Main Page, but people are very emotionally involved with this issue and get offended when I propose its deletion.
- Summary on each of of the Hostel's life and notable alumnus (a separate section with names, links to thier wiki pages and halls indicated), and deleting the section Halls of residence
- The article Annual events (move from main page as specifically related to student life).
- The article General Championships (move from main page as specifically related to student life).
- I further plan to expand the article on student life with specific culturally significant information (probably not common elsewhere) which should make it notable.
- -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 08:15, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
- No objections. Sandstein 08:44, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

- Just ignore this, becacuse it doesn't apply to someone posting his own details on his userpage. Let's assume that the editor who posted this did it out of ignorance and let him go. He's been blocked a few times, so people are indeed watching his actions. There are, however, some benefits of not disclosing many personal details, but it's your own choice. deeptrivia (talk) 15:43, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Redlinks
Hello. When writing an article it's a good idea to use links whenever appropriate to add detail and information for a reader. It's not a good idea to link to articles that do not exist as it frustrates readers, especially new ones. When editing it's better to either change redlinks to articles that exist or write your own - but I do simply remove redlinks from time to time when I don't think anyone is going to write an article about the topic. Ifnord 14:29, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

- I also explained the position on his talk page. --Bhadani 15:04, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I have reread my original statement, I think it's quite clear. I do not think redlinks should removed completely (as you reported to Bhadani) but only when they are likely to remain "broken" forever. Ifnord 18:56, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
