Jolly Roger

Dear sir
Re. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jolly Roger Restaurant, I am seeking consensus. Toward meeting your interests, the topic already exists in improved and complete form, per Wikipedia standards, in context, at Lake City, Seattle, Washington#Storied past. The piece was chopped out by a newbie. The damage was soon repaired, and I've been trying to clean up this uprooted duplicate leftover. For Wikipedia quality, I would prefer disposing of this odd snippet, rather than leaving a scrap lying about. I am the original researcher and author of the topic in the article, post [1]. The Jolly Roger story is an integral part of the character of Lake City, but it is otherwise not particularly encyclopedic.

So toward consenus, would you change your vote? Thank you for your consideration. --GoDot 11:10, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Unwanted displays on my 2a page

Hi Ambuj

Well, thanks for that. I've inserted that extra code into the six items in Exercise 1. Can you try it now and see whether it makes a difference? If so, I'll pass on this suggestion to AndyZ, from whose "suggestions" article I copied the original code. Tony 13:07, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Oh, and the other problem is that unless the sentence in each question is short, it doubles back to a new line, which is mostly obliterated (you can see only the top half of that line). Any idea how to prevent this from happening? Tony 13:09, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

PS Why on earth are you going for the mop? As a general rule, those without it are the ones who contribute the intellectual content. Tony 13:10, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

That's just excellent, Ambuj. Do I understand that you've gone through the whole thing with respect to both issues (premature displays and semi-hidden overhangs)? I think you have, but let me know if I need to do it. I'll direct AndyZ to this discussion. Thanks TONS.

Tony 06:41, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

PS I can download at 20 thousand bits a second, so your suggestion may not work! Tony 06:54, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Ahmedabad FAC

Hello Ambuj. Can you have a look at Ahmedabad. Nirav and I feel that the article is now ready for FAC but want you to look at it, especially at the references section. Thanks. And great going at RfA. You deserve it. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 03:50, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Great. Thanks. Off to work. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 06:49, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
I have made some changes. [2]. One problem is with the legend of Ahmed Shah. The legend story is there in all the books of Ahmedabad and I have also cited one book for the legend. So does it qualify as a weasel word? I changed the sentence to read "A popular story about the creation of Ahmedabad..." instead of "Legend has it...". The second point that I have not addressed yet is the cite news tag. I am not very familiar with the use of that tag. Will do that soon. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 07:22, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Any more work required? I have to go out now. Will be back at around 6:30. Should I submit it for FAC then or now? - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 08:13, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Wait till the evening. I might find something more. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 08:15, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Ok. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 08:29, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Are you there? Did you find any other issues? I have put the headline of the article in the cite news tag. Got it from the archives of times epaper. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 13:39, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I am starting the process. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 14:25, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. That was something I overlooked. I will try and sort out the problem. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 15:26, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Hello. Hope you are still there. Please take a look at the references again now. I think they are sufficiently expanded. I didn't understand the point about inline citations though. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 17:22, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Favour?

Hi Ambuj. Will you do me a favour and have a look at the formatting for my new question/answer tutorial on sentence length? Only the first one is done. The only problem that sticks out to me is the large gap between the heading "Solution" and the actual solution sentence. How to reduce?

Also, I've tried a light green background for the paragraph exercise at the top. I wonder whether you can point me to the codes for all of the available colours; I'd like something even lighter. Tony 09:22, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Ambuj: Thank you, thank you. A few points.

  • I've not gone for a "safe" background colour, because none of those displayed at the linked articles was light enough. I hope that it causes no problems on an 800 x 600 display.
  • There was problematic text-wrapping on my screen in the question box, so I've shorted the lines by using the line breaker—rather laboriously, by trial and error. And I've ramped up the vertical measure to 10em.
  • I'm unsure of the problem you talk of with 800 x 600. When I choose that (down from 1680 x 1050), it looks fine—just ... big. Let me know if it's a problem still.
  • Do you like the hint idea?

My dear Ambuj, I merely wanted to drop by to thank you for the good time you've gifted me with your most ingenious optional questions, which I answered with delight (as well as many people did!), not to mention your thoughtful advices for the Portal. I think talking to you was overdue, in fact, since I never really got the chance to express you how impressed and moved I was with the diffs I provided at your RfA. It shows that not only you're a hard working and talented editor, but a great person as well. I hope we get to talk more pretty soon! Hi, could you help in copy-editing Adi Shankara. I've nominated it for FAC here. I'd appreciate it if you could help. --BabubTalk 16:44, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Ya RfA..

I've been looking through your RfA and would like to give my thoughts about it to you. Some voters have opposed or even changed to oppose in under 2 minutes from their last edit. So let me guess this straight,

  1. they browse to WP:RfA from the last page they were on
  2. scroll down to your name on the list
  3. and they've read all the main oppose reasons
  4. and look at all the difs included with them
  5. make their decision whether to oppose
  6. scrolled back up to the Edit button
  7. and edited in their oppose vote
All in under 2 minutes?

I'm not giving out any names, but sometimes I just feel people oppose just for the sake of it instead of actually reviewing the oppose reasons. Fact is, your being opposed because

  • Your standards of a featured article are higher than other users
  • Your approach disagreeing with SV's actions on the talk page weren't particularly great, you wanted opinions about the situation but went the wrong way about it.

Now, I don't understand how that will make you a significantly bad admin. But hey, maybe it's just me? My email is active if you want to respond privately.--Andeh 16:58, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

While I disagree with people's reasoning in opposing, I do not get to make the final decision myself. Don't take it too hard, everyone agrees you are a good contributor and what doesn't kill you typically makes you stronger. I'm sure you'll be even more well prepared next time, just take into account what things you can from the oppose votes in order to improve what you can and let go of the rest. - Taxman Talk 17:18, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I have to say, I was a bit p*ssed off at some of the reasons for people opposing (especially the comment about your English, but whatever...). And, there does seem to have been a bit of piggy-back voting (But I see that on many RfAs these days) by people who have evidentally friends of Slim Virgin and so felt obligied to back up that particular POV :) If you do go up for RfA again, I wish you the best of luck and will, obviously, support. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 17:53, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

You got an overwhelming support and unfortunately due to a variety of reasons, some significant opposition as well. Don't let this worry you in any way and continue your good work. You'll get there definitely. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 17:56, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Also notice that almost everyone that supported you in the beginning, did not change their opinion in the end. It was a whole lot of new opposes that showered in after the FAC thing. So obviously people who had confidence in you still do. I surely do. -- Lost(talk) 17:59, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Like me. :) --Andeh 22:08, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Well this sure has ruined my day (or night rather). I have long known you to be among the finest contributors around & one if the most deserving admin-candidates. Please do not take any of the oppose votes to heart & continue making your stellar contributions. I definitely see you becoming an admin in the not-too-distant future. Don't worry about it man, it's clear that you are ready for adminship, 100 people can't be wrong, but unfortuanetly we can't all become admin's straight away. Merging issue

I'm all for merging Fdi India into the Economy of India article. Your thoughts? Tony

I'll merge it now. WRT admin—I strongly object to the RfA process, and to the fact that it fails to stop arrogant, aggressive people becoming admins. And like it or not, bucket and mop would have eaten into your editing time. Promote yourself to "editor". Tony 14:20, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi

Hi Ambuj, belated birthday wishes! I'm not in India at the moment, and so my internet connection is a bit sporadic. I'm sorry your RFA didn't turn out too good, I came to know about it only at the last minute. RFA is a mess I know, and the issue was not very serious. All that was needed was to have a reputed editor break down SV's opposition and make it less vitriolic that what it seemed. Unfortunately nobody rose up to the occasion and we had the equivalent of a sock-voting "NO" without personally evaluating if there was a serious problem. PS I'll resume editing this weekend. August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Accreditions

Hi,

I am unsure of the changes you made, which don't seem to make sense to me. You have added AICTE as a school accreditor, while I know it as an accredition council for technical education (college level). Even the link you provide speaks it as a part of high education system, which means college level. I believe this confusion was created because of differences in way things are referred to in India, as against the US (this part I am deducing from the discussion above). Also, I find the AICTE category too much misleading as the colleges are not a part of AICTE, the accredition being the only link. A better category would be Category:AICTE approved colleges and universities, though even that definition would cover nearly every technical college in India. There are only a handful of those that are not accredited by AICTE, so this separation looks like dividing the things in the world as bananas and non-bananas. I request you to undo the changes you made, as I find them misleading and inaccurate. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 13:40, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

1) Yes, All India Council for Technical Education is part of education department and it accredits, according to the department.[4]
2) I don't understand your point. The schools are in the category because they are accredited by All India Council for Technical Education. If you click on the category it states "The following are schools under the supervision of All India Council for Technical Education." This is standard on wikipedia, for example, New England Association of Schools and Colleges has the schools it accredits in its catgeory, which is a subcategory of school accreditation. I guess if you have a problem with the categories of that name you should propose renaming all the accreditation categories, and not just that one.
3) The categories are for accreditated schools, whether there by 20 or 2,000 (in the case of New England Association of Schools and Colleges) it doesn't matter. There are only a few New England schools not accredited by that assoc. It is show the relation and oversight, which recognizes the degrees (accredited vs non-accredited). In the case of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools it accredits over 13,000+ schools. CaliEd 19:27, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
I would like to work with you on some issues about Indian education since you can provide good material to combat false information. There is much whitewash and vandalism at these pages.[5][6] If you see here[7] with the timeline someone is trying to pass this off as legitmate without any proof. Perhaps you can expand the Indian accreditation articles and add insight into them to prevent white wash and vandals from giving questionable institutions the same statue as real universities.
Maybe you can expand and clarify University Grants Commission (India), Department of Higher Education (India), and List of recognized accreditation associations of higher learning to name a few. CaliEd 06:54, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for your message, Abuj. I'm glad to see you back and to know everything is good. Cheers, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 10:38, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi

I noticed that you are a frequent contributor to featured portal candidates, so I consider it my God-given duty to annoy you with this request: Would you mind reviewing my portal and letting me know if there are any problems before I bring it to WP:FPCAN? I have already asked Kirill Lokshin, and he gave me several pointers, all of which I corrected, but I just wanted to run it by another portal guy before I throw it into the fire. Thanks! Help!!

Urgent help needed! I do not have Hindi scripts in this comp I am using now. Could you please change the name in Darjeeling?(as you pointed out in FAC). I have changed some ndashes to mdashes. Please see if some more gross overlooking is there. Thanks a lot.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:42, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Haha! How dumb I am! (everybody says so!) Yes I could just copy-paste it. However, Sukh has something else to say, as u have noticed. Better let it remain as it is. Lets see if anybody else says something. Ok?--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:19, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Pmanderson

Thanks much for catching my double vote; I often withhold judgment on a nomination until I've had the opportunity to evaluate a candidate and thought I'd done so here... :) Joe 21:00, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Ahmedabad

Hi Ambuj. Ahmedabad is finally a FA (so is Darjeeling)! Thanks once again for all the help. I saw your edits reverted reverted by Yeditor on Ambedkar. IMO, the links need to go. See the comments I made on the PR. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 06:02, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes. I had guessed your reasons. That is indeed the best way to go, instead of piling on at FAC. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 06:30, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

IIT KGP promotion

Hi Ambuj! I noticed that you recently upgraded the IIT KGP Main building pic as a selected pic on the portal. Not that I feel that the picture lacks the criteria, nor am I criticising your good effort, but I feel that we should have waited for a consensus before promoting it. We should get more people to participate in the article and picture selection process on the portal. What do you say to adding a new row to Template:India collaborations?-- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK14:50, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Have you been thinking of the archived nom page as the cadidature page. I just saw you voted for Toda Tribal Hut, which has been selected (and its discussion archived) long back. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:26, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Haha! My bad, that one. I was playing around with the revisions (sans the diffs) on different tabs, and voilà, there were three unseen noms on the page. I assumed you had just put them up. But I understood my mistake as soon as I saved my vote and went back to the candidates page. Yeah, I know, pretty silly of me. But thats what happened. :P
Regarding the collaborations template, I think it would be nice to see what everyone thinks of the idea. -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK17:20, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Hey ambuj, could you take a look at the Kochi article? I hope to put it through FAC in a couple of days. I'd value your comments. TIA!-- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK19:14, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look through them today itself, and let you know when I'm done. -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK11:57, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi!

Hey Ambuj. I was on a long vacation to India. Came back yesterday. Got tons of pics to upload :) deeptrivia (talk) 18:39, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your help! In fact, I just nominated Ladakh for FA. With your help, hopefully it would soon achieve that standard. deeptrivia (talk) 20:09, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Hi! Something peculiar happened just now! I tried editing in the talkpage of Ratnadeep joshi (talk · contribs). Somehow I ended up adding something to your welcome subuser page! And then had to revert it. And then tried to edit again on that user's talk page, but could not!!! Did you happen to notice something similar?--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:58, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for the additions, but I guess it failed because there weren't any supports coming and I was too busy to actually work on the article during the week. I too was surprised by the delisting, it was there for less than a week. I'll try again when I have more time. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:48, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Look out...

.. for this. Congrats -- Lost(talk) 05:51, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Regarding your comment, well what can I say!! It sure looks very interesting to me... I remember the previous one about the chicken too. That one had some problem regarding RD not being online etc. Ah well, you are far better at these things than I.. so I can hardly give any advice. Maybe nominate more mundane ones:) -- Lost(talk) 14:23, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Kochi

I was typing a reply when your message came. My internet connection has gone terribly slow for some reason. I've taken care of most of the stuff. Just a couple of points I'd like clarified:

  1. How do I verify the IPA? There is a concern (on the talk page) about the voice rendering too - I'll take care of that soon.
  2. Since 2003 however, an economic rejuvenation has arrested the morbid decline, leading to a spurt in the city's growth. - That was ripped off Kolkata, an FA. :P Do you think I should change it?
  3. About the "low industrialisation" ref - I couldnt find any refs particularly for Kochi. The entire state was under an economic stagnation for a long time, so that includes Kochi too. If that comes up during FAC, I guess I'm left with no option but to clarify myself. Any other ideas?
  4. Good that you pointed out the GDP flaw. That site gave the same GDP for all the Indian cities! Apparently, it was India's GDP. I've removed it now.
  5. I have cut the number of newspapers, but have left the TV channels as it is, because all of them are very popular in Kerala.
  6. 44:1000 ??!! Hehe...., too bad for you. Better consider this. Image:Tongue.png -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK14:29, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Also, is there anything else you'd like changed about Kochi?-- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK15:08, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

PS: I just discovered that it wasnt my internet connection, but wikipedia, that had gone slow. :P

Ladakh FAC

Hey Ambuj, can you see if your concerns on Ladakh FAC have been addressed? Thanks, deeptrivia (talk) 17:02, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
