Ambrose Madison

Ambrose Madison married Frances Taylor, and he was the father of James Madison, Sr. and the grandfather of U.S. President James Madison. His father was John Madison, and his mother was Isabella Minor Todd. Ambrose was born in 1696 in Orange County, Virginia, and died there on August 27, 1732.

Ambrose and his brother-in-law Thomas Chew received 4,675 acres of land in a Virginia land grant in 1723, which they named Mount Pleasant. By the 1750's, it was referred to as "Home House", but by 1780 it was called Montpelier, now famous as the home of President James Madison. He was killed in 1732 after three angry slaves snuck into his house and poisoned him in his sleep.
