Ambika Dutt Ranga was born on 19 September 1919 at Bikaner. When he was five years old his father died, he was then raised by a foster father. Ambika was fond of football during his childhood. At the age of sixteen years he became popular among state players as "American Got." In 1937, he played in IFA Shield tournament at Calcutta. At that time, Brigd. Bagh Singh was the captain of state team, he played so marvelously and became knows as the best player of football in Raj Putana. According to Master Motilal Purohit, Ranga was a true player. In 1940 he played as a member of the Rajasthan Sporting Club, Mohammedan Sporting Club and Dynamo Club.
He was an International Player and went to Kathmandu, Dhaka, Rangoon and Lahore. He played in Durand Cup, the Santosh Trophy, and the DCM Cup until 1955. He was also the Co-Founder of Prof. Ranga's Physical Institute in 1952.
