Ambiental

Ambiental Technical Solutions Ltd was founded in 1997 as a partnership of researchers in the field of digital terrain modeling and geographical information systems (GIS) at Cambridge University, England. Its involvement in flood modeling has attracted great media interest following flood events such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the widespread flooding across the UK in 2007.

The company and its managing director, Dr. Justin Butler, have been featured in articles in British newspapers such as The Sunday Telegraph, The Guardian, The Times and the Daily Express. Ambiental has also been featured on BBC News[1] in 2006, and its flooding simulations have been used in a Newsnight documentary about the 2007 UK floods on BBC2.

The documentary Dispatches: Britain Under Water which was broadcast on 03 December 2007 on Channel 4 [2] used Ambiental to model water depth, flow direction and velocity following a dam burst at the heart of Birmingham city centre.[3]

Whilst larger engineering companies are involved with modelling of flood defences and other management schemes, Ambiental has attracted interest from the insurance and reinsurance industry for their high detail flood modelling in urban areas and has worked in parternship with companies such as Aon and Norwich Union.[citation needed] It has also been featured in notable publications in the insurance industry press, such as Insurance International, Insurance Day, Global Reinsurance, AIRMIC News[4] and The Review: Worldwide Reinsurance.[5]
