Amargosa Valley

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For the town in Nevada, see Amargosa Valley, Nevada

The Amargosa Valley is a valley which straddles the border of the states of California and Nevada. It is named for the river which flows through it, the Amargosa River. The name likely derives from the name of a springs or wetland in the area, agua amargosa, Spanish for "bitter water"[1] (akin to "Badwater", the place in Death Valley where the Amargosa River terminates). Although the river follows a "U" pattern, flowing southward, then around the southern spur of the Amargosa Range, and northward into Death Valley, only the portion east of the mountains is referred to as the Amargosa Valley. It is for the most part coincident with the Amargosa Desert.
