Alyeska

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alyeska is an archaic spelling of the Aleut word Alaskax meaning "mainland", "great country", or "great land", for which the name for the state of Alaska was derived. It is related to the word Unalaska (or Ounalashka) from the same root.

The community of Alyeska near Anchorage (in the Anchorage Municipality), Alaska, takes its name from this particular spelling of Alaska, as does the skiing area and hotel Alyeska Resort at Mount Alyeska in Girdwood, and the corporation Alyeska Pipeline Service Company.
