For a period of time demotored McKeen railmotors were used to provide passenger services.

The VR took control of the line and station on October 1, 1924, and the station was later renamed to Altona in 1938. A loop siding existed beside the platform for a number of years, and a siding once extended west towards the site of Westona station, serving a coal mine. The passenger service was not extended to Westona until January 1985, then to Laverton in April the same year.
