Alton is an unincorporated community in Humboldt County, California, located along U.S. Route 101 and State Route 36. The ZIP Code is 95562. The community is inside area code 707.
The community was named in 1862 for the town of Alton, Illinois, the hometown of the founder.[1]

In the state legislature Alton is located in the 2nd Senate District, represented by Democrat Pat Wiggins, and in the 1st Assembly District, represented by Democrat Patty Berg. Federally, Alton is located in California's 1st congressional district.
