Alto Trás-os-Montes

Alto Trás-os-Montes is a Portuguese subregion (NUTS level 3) integrated in the Norte region. It aggregates 14 concelhos (municipalities) with a total area of 8,168 km² making it one of the largest Portuguese subregions. The main urban centers are Bragança (pop. 23,000), Chaves (pop. 22,000) e Mirandela (pop. 11,000). Other cities:Macedo de Cavaleiros(6,500),Valpacoa(4,500)and Miranda do Douro/Miranda de I Douro in Mirandese language(2,100) The total population in 2005 was 220,300 inhabitants (2005 statistics). It is bordered to the north and east by Spain, to the south by the subregion of Douro and to the west by the subregion of Tâmega. Agriculture products (olive oil, meat production and fruits) are the main production of the subregion.
