Alteratie

The Alteratie was the revolution in Amsterdam on 26 May 1578 in which the Roman Catholics lost sole control of the city government. Trade interests played an important role, because Amsterdam was isolated and other cities were threatening to take over its trade. Nobody was wounded, killed or hurt. On 29 May, a new council was formed, consisting of thirty Calvinists and ten Roman Catholics.
