Altavilla Silentina is a town of the Province of Salerno, in the Campania Region, just 70 miles south of Naples.

It is located on a hill 900 feet above sea level and it is shielded on the eastern side by the Monte Alburno (5100 ft) and the plain of the Sele River and the Tyrrhenian Sea at West. The panorama includes the island of Capri, the mountains of the Amalfi Coast and the Gulf of Salerno in its northern part. The river Calore Salernitano touches much of its western boundaries.

The territory of Altavilla was populated since the 7th century BCE as demonstrasted by a vase of that era has been found in some ruins. About the territory of the town can be located also the place where Spartacus and its 60,000 slaves rebelled to Rome were definitely defeated by Roman general Pompey in 71 BCE.
The current town was built by Normans under Robert Guiscard (c.1015–1085) in the second half of the eleventh century.
