[edit] Favorite Number

I saw that you listed 16 as one of your favorite numbers at Meta:Wikipedians by favorite numbers. Any reason as to 16 specifically? Jaberwocky6669 July 7, 2005 04:50 (UTC)

It's the square of a square... apart from that, I'm really not sure. Alphax τεχ 7 July 2005 04:58 (UTC)

[edit] Welcoming template

Hi there! I was told you're one of the frequent welcomers of new users. I was wondering - since this is a rather frequently asked question, would you please add a link to Wikipedia:Merge to your welcoming template? Thanks. Radiant_>|< 20:40, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

  • Yes, I really need to overhaul it - feel free to change anything you want in it! It's located at User:Alphax/Welcome, so if there's something you think could be changed, {{sofixit}}! Thanks for the suggestion, Alphax τεχ 00:59, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] What to do about vandalism?

Hello. I've spotted an article that someone has defaced (Article:Nox (Game), What should i do?

  • See WP:RV. You might also want to read WP:MOS and WP:NC. Also, instead of pasting in the URL, you can type in the article name (the bit in bold up the top) in square brackets, like so: [[Wikipedia]] → Wikipedia. Also, Remember to always sign all of your posts on talk pages. Typing four tildes after your comment ( ~~~~ ) will insert a signature showing your username and a date/time stamp, which is very helpful. If there's anything else you want help with, ask me (hit the "edit" link next to this section) or at the help desk. Thanks and happy editing, Alphax τεχ 01:41, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
  • sorry, I wrote this in such a hurry that i completely forgot to sign... hopefully i didn't take too much time out of your day! thanks for the help. --Wallaby 10:00, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Admin Nomination

Alphax, are you already an admin? if you are not, will you mind if I nominate you for RfA?--Exir KamalabadiContribs 02:41, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

  • I'm not, but I'd like to wait until I have a few more contribs in the article namespace. You're not the first person to suggest it BTW. Thanks for asking though. Alphax τεχ 02:46, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
    • Well, tell me when you think you have enough edits. Nice welcoming message, BTW.--Exir KamalabadiContribs 02:51, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome

Thanks for the welcome...but I'm already a user. I'm just not signed in. However, I really appreciate that you'd take the time to welcome an anon. Need to shoot a Barnstar your way later.  :^) Best, Lucky 6.9 via 71.102.66.81 03:45, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hey Alphax

Thanks for the summary help. My article The Edge Chronicles Twig Saga is now 12 sections long with no stubs! Thanks Again, FE411 τ

Hi Alphax. The article you nominated for deletion is part of a sequence of vandalism created by one user. I was just about to speedy it. DJ Clayworth 14:42, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Drop-down menus in top tabs

I got sick of having too many top tabs for the screen, so I thought: why not convert them into something like this? Well, I'm having troubles with the javascript to do it. Any ideas? Alphax τεχ 04:21, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

So I did :) See User:Alphax/monobook.js (look for "addlimenu") and User:Alphax/monobook.css. Now you can have (almost) infinite tabs! Alphax τεχ 14:13, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mediawiki scripting project/page

All hail the master of monobook.js! I was wondering if there might be a way to collect all the different bits and place them all on one page, maybe even start a Wikiproject/page on Meta for this purpose? Let me know what you think (this is a thread, edit this section to reply) about the matter - it would be really nice to implement some sort of standardised system for all the common functions Alphax τεχ 11:06, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Alphax. Yeah, I'm trying to find some time to wrap my head around a systematic approach to "hacking" the 'pedia. Of course, you know about Wikipedia:Tools, right? :) Functc ) 22:22, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
I wonder if there is a way to find and contact all users currently using JS to do these things... any idea who originated the common features (eg. adding the purge/edit section 0 links)? Oh, and what should the page be called? Wikipedia:Tools is mostly external stuff. Alphax τεχ 00:14, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] monobook.js

(Oops, darn that enter key.)

What I meant to ask before accidentally saving a blank message is: We talked about your monobook.js on IRC yesterday, and discussed me copying it to my monobook.js and adding a block feature to the list. However, I've been unsuccessful; every time I try to enter the feature, it doesn't work, and all the features your code is supposed to insert disappear. Since you seem to know something about this, could you tell me: What do I need to do to add the "block user" tags to user & user talk pages? -- Essjay · Talk 04:53, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

I'll look into it on the Wikicities site I'm an admin at... try asking ABCD though. Alphax τεχ 07:33, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

I've now asked ABCD; I'll appreciate any help either of you can offer. Thanks! -- Essjay · Talk 07:42, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

Um, I've got the "block" and "blocklog" tabs working - but the autofilling of the usernames doesn't seem to work for me. Does it work for ABCD? Alphax τεχ 08:15, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Well, it's kinda kludgy, but I've added:
function add_block_tab()
{
    var c1 = document.getElementById('column-one');
    var tabs = document.getElementById('p-cactions').getElementsByTagName('ul')[0];

    // use the "edit this page" tab to get already-tidied url
    var editlk = document.getElementById('ca-edit').getElementsByTagName('a')[0].href;
    // cut everything up to "title=" from the start and everything past "&action=edit" from the end
    editlk = editlk.substring(editlk.indexOf('title=') + 6, editlk.lastIndexOf('&action=edit'));
    editlk = editlk.substring(editlk.indexOf(':') + 1);
    var slloc = editlk.indexOf('/');
    if(slloc > 0) editlk = editlk.substring(0, slloc);

    // add "block" tab
    addlilink(tabs, '/wiki/Special:Blockip?faketarget=' + editlk, 'block', '');

    // add "blocklog" tab
    addlilink(tabs, '/wiki/Special:Log/block?page=User:' + editlk, 'blocklog', '');
}
and in morelinks():
if(document.title.indexOf('User:') == 0 || document.title.indexOf('User talk:') == 0)
{
    add_block_tab();
}
Try that... Alphax τεχ 08:49, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Templates with section headers

Sorry, but I don't get what this means. What needs to be done? Nv8200p 13:30, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

Don't forget to substitute templates with section headers (such as {{Welcome2}} and {{idw}}) when you use them on talk pages - it reduces server load, and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

  • Hi, sorry for the late response, I was out of town for a week. Actually, I stopped using the default welcome and {{idw}} templates awhile back and subst my own versions. To be fair however, most templates have explicit instructions on their talk page, which tell users how to use them. Although this one does mention using subst, its not cut & dry as the others, and probably should be rewritten to be more clear and concise. I would recommend fixing it to maybe have a bold section like Template talk:Test, granted I am partial to the instruction layout style I used on Template talk:Voice actor. I think it would benefit users in the future. Thanks for your message, and I double checked all of my shortcuts to make sure I was already using subst. Salut. Who?¿? 07:44, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Errh... what is this all about? Lupo 10:53, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

This is a thread. If you want to stay synchronised, don't substitute it. Some of us are considering forming a wikiproject (or something) to coordinate on scripts for the Monobook skin. Ironically, almost of all of it will be implemented in JS, not CSS. I thought you might be a knowledgable person when it comes to this stuff. Alphax τεχ 13:58, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
Guys, just posting a link to here on people's talk pages is good enough to attract interested parties. Transcluding this screws up section editing on all affected talk pages. And I don't think I'll get the new message alert anyway if this is transcluded. Lupo 14:07, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Help us decide a name then! Alphax τεχ 15:07, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
As to coordinating scripts for the Monobook skin: what's the objective? A library of plug-in JavaScript snippets? A manual for the CSS used? Lupo 14:07, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, a library of plugins. Alphax τεχ 15:07, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
I can try to help with css more than js btw as I'm much better than that (but still not that good). If anyone needs a person to double check stuff I also have a bit o' time on me hands =) This project looks cool though. Sasquatch 19:42, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

What is the link to the monobook project? - Ta bu shi da yu 00:12, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

There isn't one yet, we need a name and to decide where it should be located (on WP:, meta:, commons:)... Alphax τεχ 04:04, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
I think it should be in the Wikipedia namespace. Good idea, btw. - Ta bu shi da yu 04:18, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Though I know very little about JS and how it works and most of the stuff on my monobook.js is just copied and pasted I'd be willing to join since I've been meaning to learn javascript and it would be a good way to put real use to it. I also think it should be on the WP: namespace btw. Jtkiefer T | @ | C ----- 15:53, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Public domain

Hi there, AlphaX. An acquaintance of mine noted that you once quoted me on the mailing list regarding public domain, to which I have never been subscribed. I forgot about that comment, actually, and I have since partially reversed my position. Because I'm not a lawyer and the legal theory of placing works in the public domain is untested, I no longer contend that it's actually impossible to do so in any jurisdiction. However, I do think it is a good idea to do as you have done, to supply an additional "backup" license in case some future decision renders release into the PD impossible in some regions. I try to put both PD and free-use on most of my stuff now. I feel foolish that I made such strong statements without proper qualification and others had relied upon them. Please forgive my arrogance.

Oh, and one more little thing: no offense, but could you please be careful about posting my username in the future? I use Deco in signatures because my user name is too easy to search for. I really wish I could just change my username, but I can't. Thanks a lot. Deco 06:10, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

It took me a while to find it - it was a post I made on Wikipedia-L back in May this year. I quoted something you had said on Template talk:MultiLicenseMinorPD from the raw wikitext. Anyway, you weren't the only one I quoted - I quoted the sources you provided. It was a good argument at the time, and I decided to use both versions (with disclaimers) to be certain.
As for usernames - I have an Uppercase A and a lowercase x, one word, two syllables - and somehow I had the luck to pick (almost 10 years ago) a nick that is far from unique. Unfortunately, usernames are what we go by here, so if I saw "Deco" somewhere and I didn't know who it was, I'd be inclined to visit User:Deco. Thanks, Alphax τεχ 07:39, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
Ah, that's a good point. To my surprise, User:Deco turned out to still be available, so I registered it and redirected it to my user page so that no one will be (too) confused. Incidentally, on the PD issue, I think it would be great if Congress enacted legislation to correct its oversight and explicitly allow a copyright holder to release a work into the public domain. Maybe we could lobby for it, or create a petition or something. Deco 17:40, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Monobook

Was that message you posted to my talk a mass mailing or was I somehow involved in the discussion? I can't remember talking about the monobook skin all that much. - Mgm|(talk) 11:01, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks so much Alphax!

I just wanted to say I was delighted to be welcomed to Wikipedia by you, I feel so much more at home now. Thank you very much, and happy editing to you too!

PS. That is such a useful set of links you sent me! BSTRhino 01:00, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

So far i have read the Wikipedia:Guide to Votes for deletion page and the Wikipedia:Deletion policy page; and went through their contents. However, what puzzles me is that certain people keep on wanting to delete several pages of articles regarding Warcraft custom games such as Defense of the Ancients, Hero Siege and Sheep Tag (the first 2 still being VfD'ed). As I have contributed a significant bit to those pages, I naturally feel sad about having them thrown in the garbage.

The question i have is - those pages were meant to be informative, somewhat in a Neutral POV, and is not meant to be some kind of advertising or personal website - and the Wikipedia policy states that "wikipedia is not paper"; so why are these articles continually being selected for VfDs? If it is the length or content of the article that is concerned, isn't it better to merge the short stubs into a better article, rather than just delete them outright? IMHO, i think certain editors are biased to the Warcraft custom maps category, thereby warranting the articles' deletion.

Hope you could clarify these questions for me ... and thanks for your time. =)

[edit] Heart

Thank you, well spotted. There was a wood of redirects, and I inadvertedly must have deleted the main page to prepare for a move. I have restored the history and reverted to the actual text in the article. Sorry for the inconvenience. JFW | T@lk 13:55, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Someone else likes me!

I don't think this page should exist. User is pompous and contributes nothing but removal of better information than his own. (And yes, WikiPedia is a circle jerk!) (preceding unsigned comment by 67.10.73.69 23:49, 14 August 2005 (UTC))

Gee, thanks :) Alphax τεχ 00:28, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the welcome message. It was a nice touch.

[edit] Why do people constantly question my turth?

[edit] Why are people stopping me?

Hi, I recently added 3 pages:

-Ryan Moore -Kitty Goodard -Blood Line

I found people requesting that my pages were delted, claming it was a student film. As the writer of the film, I can confirm that the movie is real and being made. It is not a student film. I was shocked and digusting at the accusations that because of my age, I wa snotbelived. SOme one accused me of starting several page sto promote a film I want to make. It is being made and it is not promotion. I am adding a geunie independent film and tweo confirmed cast members. Please, I request that people stop mocking my film and discontinue their requests for my pages to be taken down. I hope you make the right descion, because I am very upset at this unfairness.

Alphax, I just want you to know that you should probably consider changing to a different brand of deodorant, because this one you're using now ain't working. Just telling you as a friend. Fernando Rizo T/C 10:11, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Abraam Bishop of Fayoum

Talk:Abraam Bishop of Fayoum The Coptic Orthodox Synaxarium (Book of Saints) from which this article is adapted is in the public domain. The URL you are referring to is just one online version of the synaxarium. Identical copies exist at dozens of other sites which maintain their own databases of synaxarium entries (always the same text).

[edit] Welcome to Wikipedia

Hi, just wanted to let you know I like your Welcome to Wikipedia "template" and have used it. Very nice work indeed. --Paul Laudanski 21:48, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

I've been posting on Wikipedia on and off for several months now, and just got the "Welcome" on my talk page, telling me to read a lot of pages I (thought I) had already read. Was it in response to something I did wrong somewhere? Or was I just recently noticed? I'm given to understand it's rude not to respond to a talk page message, but it's not clear what your post was asking/telling me. /blahedo (t) 06:52, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] That probability question

We have: P(L) = 0.9, P(M) = 0.75, P(M | L) = 0.8

\begin{matrix}
\Rightarrow & P(M \cap L) & = & P(M | L) P(L) & = & 0.8 \times 0.9 & = & 0.72 \\
\Rightarrow & P(M \cap \neg L) & = & P(M) - P(M \cap L) & = & 0.75 - 0.72 & = & 0.03 \\
\Rightarrow & P(M | \neg L) & = & P(M \cap \neg L) / P(\neg L) & = & 0.03 / 0.1 & = & 0.3
\end{matrix}

Thus, the probability of M being true, given that L is false, is 0.3. cky 12:52, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Blog software for a simple setup with PHP and MySQL

I've got a website which supports PHP and has a MySQL database, and I want to put some simple blog software on it. What's a good piece of software to use that's easy to install and use? Alphax τεχ 13:22, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

Well, what exactly do you want the software to do? There's plenty of software out there, but which one you should use depends on what you want to be able to do. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 14:03, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
WordPress is a decent general-purpose blogging system; though, as Pidgeot said, if you have special needs, there may be something out there that will be more appropriate. Garrett Albright 14:50, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
Um, it needs to be free, easy to install (as in: put files in directory), easy to set up, and customisable... oh, and reasonably small... Alphax τεχ 14:58, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
That's not enough to give a good recommendation. What features should be available to you when posting? What features do you want for users who comment upon your posts? (if you want to let them comment, that is!)
If you're satisfied with entering everything through PMA (using HTML), no commenting and two pages (one for the latest entries, one for showing all posts), I can change the system I use for newsposts in less than 2 minutes. Anything else, and I'd have to code, so it'd take longer - but in that case, there's probably a usable system already. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 16:11, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
I use Blosxom. It is wrritten in Perl and does not need a DBMSMasatran 10:22:08, 2005-09-12 (UTC)
Okay, I've gone for WordPress... see what happens... Alphax τεχ 11:06, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
I've been using WordPress and without having prior of CSS or PHP I managed to poke around and adjust the layout in a way I liked. I had no problems posting to it, I'm very impressed with it thus far. It's also served by a manual in the form of a wiki at http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page which should look rather familiar ;o) (though it's organisation leaves a lot to be desired at the moment, I feel). --bodnotbod 02:51, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Timelines

Thnkas for the alert. There was another one, which I recognised as being special on the edit page, I would have spotted this one, but for wikipedia's reluctance to show pages after an edit. I can prevent it recurring. Thanks again. Rich Farmbrough 13:41, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi! About the Crystal icons, iirc there is a version whose size is 128x128. I'm currently downloading the pack, I will upload them on Commons asap. Regards, Dake 10:28, 17 September 2005 (UTC)
