Several killings are blamed on a rare canine imported from China - a Wanshang Dhole, a species of dog thought to be extinct. Mulder and Scully team with a stubborn sheriff, a peculiar and unconventional cryptozoologist, and a reclusive canine expert in order to seek out the dog. However, the expert is withholding some personal information.

At the conclusion to the episode, Mulder receives a new "I Want To Believe" poster. The previous one had been destroyed in the fire that destroyed his office in the final episode of season 5, The End (The X-Files).
