[edit] Summary

Date: circa 1981 - 1983
Location: At sea
Photographer: Randy C. Bunney

A seaman aboard the freighter USNS Southern Cross climbs a king post to begin rigging a bosun's chair for working aloft during maintenance of the ship's cargo rigging. Such maintenance involves the seaman applying grease by hand or "slushing" the cable while suspended in a bosun's chair. The process includes another seaman on deck "paying out" or slacking the bitter end of the rope that is led through a fairlead aloft. Subsequently, the seaman aloft is lowered towards the deck as the line attached to the bosun's chair is slacked. Slushing is accomplished during the descent.
