AVMS was a California Distinguished School in 1996 and a National Blue Ribbon School in 2000. It consistently scores high on standardized tests, and is in the top 85% of comparable schools. It has also won awards in the VideoFest, CA State Media Festival, and National History Day.

AVMS has been host to a "Marathon Team" since the year 2002, with less than 20 runners competing. It is overseen by the organization Students Run LA"(SRLA). Its math teacher, Mr. Ewell, has been the head coach of this team every year, and has coordinated weekend runs with schools such as Don Juan Avila Middle School and Newhart Middle School. For the 2007-08 school year, the assistant principle has head coached the marathon team.
