Alinghi (Encosta de Lago by Oceanfast, foaled August 20, 2001) is an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won four Group One races, including the Newmarket Handicap and AUS$4,161,740 in prizemoney. She was trained by Lee Freedman.
Alinghi is one of the rare fillies to win the Newmarket Handicap in just her 3 year old year of racing, the Newmarket Handicap is the greatest sprint race in Australian history and has been won by some of the greatest horses to have been seen in Australia such as Placid Arc, Schillaci, Bernborough, Wakeful, Ajax and just recently the best 3yo in the world Weekend Hussler.
Some of Alinghi's other Group 1 wins were the AAMI Blue Diamond Stakes which is the 2nd best Juvenile stakes race in Australia, the Ascot Vale which is premier 3yo sprint race, the 1000 guineas which is run over 1600m and also The Robert Sangster Stakes, a 1200m race held in South Australia.
Over Alinghi's short yet amazing career she beat other Group 1 winners including Hollow Bullet and most notably another 3yo champion in Fastnet Rock.
Alinghi was never unplaced until her last start in Australia which was her 16th start, she finished 4th in the TJ Smith stakes, her first run around the opposite way of the track in New South Wales.
Alinghi was later sent to American in which she easily won her first start over 1700m, she was then injured during her next start and was then retired to Arrowfield stud. The Champion Oceanfast daughter elevated herself to elite status at Easter this year when her Encosta De Lago yearling set a new record of $2.6million for a filly sold in Australia.
