Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. (TSX: ATD.A) ("Couche-Tard" means "goes to bed late" in French) is the largest Canadian convenience store retailer, operating or franchising over 5,000 stores across Canada, the United States, and in other countries.
In 1994, Couche-Tard acquired La Maisonée, Quebec Mac's stores, as well as all Perette stores. Most stores under their previous names Couche-Tard, Mac's (Quebec only) and Perette were rebranded as Dépan-Escompte Couche-Tard. In 1996, the Couche-Tard name was revived, and they acquired Provi-Soir from Provigo. In 1998, most banners under Dépan-Escompte Couche-Tard and Provi-Soir (from which the "night owl" logo originates) were rebranded as Couche-Tard.
There are 581 corporate stores in Quebec under the names Couche-Tard and Dépanneur 7 jours, as well as 298 affiliated stores such as Tabatou. In Ontario, there are 605 corporate stores and 214 affiliated stores, and in Western Canada, 295 corporate stores and 71 affiliates operated under the names Mac's, Mike's Mart, Beckers Milk, Daisy Mart and Winks. The flagship Couche-Tard and Mac's stores, as well as some older Winks outlets, prominently feature a distinctive anthropomorphic red, winking owl. This logo was inherited from Provi-Soir when it was absorbed. The corporation also operates Circle K stores in the United States, Asia, and elsewhere, and holds the master franchise for Dunkin' Donuts in Quebec.
Alimentation Couche-Tard is headquartered in Laval, Quebec Canada. It employs 37,000 people and had revenue of $10.2 billion (US dollars), and net earnings of $196.2 million (US dollars) in the 2006 fiscal year.

[edit] Irving Oil stores
Many Couche-Tard locations in the province of Quebec are gas stations co-branded with Irving Oil, some of which previously operated under Irving's "Marché Mainway" banner.
On May 8, 2008, Couche-Tard and Irving Oil announced[1] that the remaining Irving Bluecanoe and Mainway retail locations will be leased to Couche-Tard, expanding the chain's reach into Atlantic Canada and New England. The stores themselves are expected to be rebranded under one of Couche-Tard's existing brands (potentially varying by region, with most American stores operating under the Circle K moniker), but they will be co-branded with Irving, which will continue to supply fuel.
