ʿAlī (Arabic: علي ) is a male Theophoric Arabic name, derived from the Arabic root ʿ-L-Y which means "high". It is a common name in Arabic countries, as well as Iran, and parts of Africa.
The first person to be given this name was Ali ibn Abu Talib, the Islamic leader and cousin with Muhammad. His name is said to be derived from al-`Alī (the [most] high), one of the 99 names of God. An expression used by some Muslims is "Ya Ali Madad" - meaning "O Ali please help!"
