I don't understand why the wikipedia page for Alfred has to advertise for the Bicycle Man. Why don't we advertise for the Jet, the Sub Shop, and Tinkertown Hardware then? Because it's not appropriate. Raidfibre 23:02, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

I agree - and it wasn't even located in Alfred village. It's gone. -- Alucard (Dr.) | Talk 13:24, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AlfredNY.Biz

I have been in an email discussion with the owner of this site over the past few days and feel that the discussion needs to be more out in the open and documented. For privacy reasons I will not disclose the contents of the emails.

The owner has added his site to the EL section of this article several times and I have removed it. I felt that the tagline on the site, saying "Alfred NY Area Businesses Have a "Great Deal In Store" for You!", plus a look around the site, indicates that the site's primary goal is to promote local commercial businesses, something that is not allowed as per WP:EL, unless it is the official site of the entity the WP page is about. I therefore feel that it fails the following requirements in "Links normally to be avoided":

  • Links mainly intended to promote a website.
  • Links to sites that primarily exist to sell products or services.

I have suggested that the owner follow the recommendation to open up a discussion here (in order to avoid potential WP:COI issues, but he has not had the chance to yet so I thought I would "facilitate" this here, rather than continue an email exchange which will go undocumented.

So the question is - is this site appropriate for the EL section of this article?

And related issues, I have also recently removed http://www.alfredny.info and http://www.alfredny.org from the page, because I feel that they do not add significantly to the article.

I would appreciate other opinions on this from established WP editors. I am more than happy to be corrected. Thanks. -- Alucard (Dr.) | Talk 13:37, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

  • Since http://www.alfredny.org/ is an official village government site, I think it is the only one potentially deserving of listing, although the two commercial sites are prettier and might be more informative. IMO, this is one of those situations where a dmoz link makes a lot of sense as a means of providing access to a lot of content (both noncommercial and commercial). --orlady 14:35, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
