Sir Alfred Edward Herbert, (September 5, 1866 – May 26, 1957), was an English industrialist who founded the Alfred Herbert machine tool company in 1887. The company which was based in Coventry became one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of machine tools in the world.[1] During the 1960s and 70s however, the company's fortunes changed as it faced tougher competition from foreign machine tool builders, and eventually the company closed in 1983.
