Alfred Atheling

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Atheling or Aetheling was the son of Aethelred II. He was a brother of Edward the Confessor. King Canute was their stepfather. He and his brother were caught in the power struggle following Canute's death.

Alfred Aetheling died in 1036 or 1037. The account given in the Wikipedia article on Guildford states apparent facts about his death. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is more cautious. The ODNB article ends ". . . efforts to sanctify him . . . failed".
