[edit] Climate

South Dakota has a continental climate with four distinct seasons ranging from typically very cold winters to hot summers. During the summers, the average high temperature throughout the state is close to 90°F(32°C). It is not unusual for South Dakota to experience severely hot, dry conditions in the summer with the daily high temperature climbing above 100°F(38°C) for days or weeks at a time. Winters are cold with high temperatures in January averaging below freezing in most of the state.

Precipitation in the state ranges from semi-arid, in the northwest (around 15 inches of annual precipitation) to semi-humid around the southeast (around 25 inches of annual precipitation). Several types of severe weather can commonly occur throughout South Dakota. Thunderstorms and the occasional tornado are a feature of every summer, and winters often can bring several blizzards and ice storms.

[edit] Interlude

Cook's journals were published upon his return, and he became something of a hero among the scientific community. Among the general public, however, the aristocratic botanist Joseph Banks was a bigger hero.[2] Banks even attempted to take command of Cook's second voyage, but removed himself from the voyage before it began, and Johann Reinhold Forster and his son Georg Forster were taken on as scientists for the voyage. Cook's son George was born five days before he left for his second voyage.[3]
