Alexandria is known as "Small Town USA" and holds an annual festival to celebrate. There is one high school, Alexandria Monroe, and two elementary schools, Marie Thurston and Cunningham. High school teams use the nickname "Tigers", and are well known for both the girls and boys basketball teams. In addition to being home to the "Tigers", Alexandria is also home to Bill and Gloria Gaither,The Gaither Music Company, and their recording studios. Former teachers in the Alexandria school system, the Gaithers have won four Grammys, and more than twenty Dove Awards for their music. They also have been named the first "Christian Songwriters of the Century" by ASCAP.
