Issued in 1967, this popular Soviet postcard image reproduces the famous painting by futurist Andrei Sokolov and cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. Entitled “In the Ocean of Storms,” the illustration depicts the chance happening of the first cosmonaut Moon-walker coming upon Luna 9, the first man-made object to soft-land upon the lunar surface. This painting was one in a series of done by the artists that showed a Soviet manned Moon landing and return to Earth.

This is an image of undeniable historic importance which is appropriate for inclusion in the Wikipedia article "Moon landing". The Luna 9 spacecraft landed on the Moon in 1966. This image was produced in 1967, two years before the American Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969. As such, it depicts the Soviet belief at the time that they would land cosmonauts on the Moon and perhaps even the first human there. Also, one artist, Leonov, was a cosmonaut widely believed to be first in line for a Soviet moonshot and so this work of art can be considered a fanciful self portrait.
