Alexander, Prince of Lippe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexander, Prince of Lippe (16 January 1831-13 January 1905) was the penultimate Prince of Lippe.
He was born in Detmold the seventh child of Leopold II, Prince of Lippe (1796-1851) and Princess Emilie of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen (1800-1867). He succeeded as Prince of Lippe on the 20 March 1895 following the death of his brother Prince Woldemar. However Prince Adolf of Schaumburg-Lippe was immediately appointed to act as regent of the principality because Alexander was suffering from a mental illness and was unable to rule. In 1897, after a commission under king Albert of Saxony on the subject, Prince Adolf was replaced as regent by Count Ernst of Lippe-Biesterfeld (1842-1904). Count Ernst ruled as regent until his death in 1904, Ernst's son Count Leopold of Lippe-Biesterfeld was appointed to replace his father, and ruled as regent until Prince Alexander's death in Sankt Gilgenberg on the 13 January 1905, which brought about the extinction of the Lippe-Detmold line, with Count Leopold of Lippe-Biesterfeld succeeding him as Prince of Lippe.
