Alexandra "Alex" Scott (January 18, 1996 - d. August 1, 2004) was born in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. She attended Penn Wynne Elementary School. She was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer, two days before her first birthday. In July 2000 she decided that she would open a lemonade stand to raise money to help other children with cancer.
In spite of her failing health, for four years, aided by her older brother Patrick, she did just that. They held an annual "Alex's Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer" stall on the family's front lawn. The charity that was inspired by Alex's idea managed to raise $1 million before she died at the age of 8.
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a non-profit organization, is committed to eradicating childhood cancer. Childhood cancers are the number one disease killer of children in the United States-more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined. Progress in treating childhood cancer has been dramatic in the last three decades largely due to increased funding for research.
Alex's idea inspired thousands of people across the country to do the same thing. Alex's Lemonade Stand is now a registered charity and has raised, as of June 2008, $19 million to be used for research into childhood cancers.
