[edit] Biography

[edit] Musical career

Alex joined The Automatic five years after Iwan, James and Rob, after the band decided to ditch having a second guitarist and have synth player Pennie.

It was reported by NME that Pennie is currently living out in Brighton, Massachusetts, USA, where he has started a new punk band, however no details of his new band have been released.[1]

Pennie has recently stated on his myspace that he will be returning to start a new project in the UK in January.[2]

Things were reported to be up with Alex and his band mates from around May 2007, when he was interviewed by NME saying:

The other three (Rob, Iwan and James) all have a bond, that isn't there with me. We're all friends and get on great and I love writing music with them but I've got a different type of family, had a different upbringing, have different taste in music and types of friends[3]

Finally on the 18th of September a statement was issued on NME and The Automatics Forum:

So you all know today we announced that keyboard player Alex Pennie has left the band.

Alex Pennie, who’s been in The Automatic since 2003, played his last gigs with the band at the recent Get Loaded In The Park festival (25th-26th August) and has left after due to finding the last year increasingly unenjoyable and growing apart from the rest of the band

The three members of The Automatic – Rob Hawkins, James Frost and Iwan Griffiths – will soon be flying to the USA to start recording the follow up to their debut album ‘Not Accepted Anywhere' and are looking forward to announcing more news soon.[4]
The Automatic

Fans of The Automatic responded on the bands forum, followed by NME publicizing the comments made by fans on nme.com, many fans feeling that Pennie's departure was bound to happen sooner or later. [5]

Since the split he has had no direct contact his former band mates other than with James Frost whom has exchanged messages on myspace with.[6]

[edit] Other appearances

Alex Pennie was on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, on 23 November.

On January 9, 2007 Alex, and former band mate Robin Hawkins stood in for Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1.

On the 2007 Vans Warped Tour he was invited on stage by his close friends Gallows to provide backing vocals for their song "Orchestra of Wolves".[7]

[edit] Personal life

Pennie is good friends with The Horrors front man Faris Rotter (Faris Badwan), however, he does not enjoy The Horrors music, just as The Horrors are said not to like The Automatic. The two bands toured together for the NME Awards Indie Rock Tour; prior to this, though, James Frost and Robin Hawkins lashed out at The Horrors branding them as "crap".[8]

He is also friends with Gallows front man, Frank Carter. Gallows is stated as one of Alex Pennie's favorite bands; "It's quite nice to be able to enjoy your friends music".[9][10]

[edit] Equipment

According to Robin Hawkins, Alex reportedly got through around one Alesis Micron a month during his time with the The Automatic.[11]
