Alex Mathie (born 20 December 1968 in Bathgate) is a Scottish former footballer who made over 200 appearances as a striker for a number of British clubs. His most recent position was as player/manager with NCEL Premier Division side Pickering Town, whom he resigned from in January 2007.
[edit] Career
Mathie began his career with Celtic, making eleven appearances before leaving for Morton in 1991 in a £100k deal. After a short loan spell with Port Vale, Mathie won a move in 1993 to Newcastle United in a deal worth just under £300k. Mathie played just 25 times in two seasons and moved to Ipswich Town in 1995 for £500k. Thirty-eight goals in over 100 appearances saw him win a £700k move to Dundee United in 1998 but Mathie would score just five goals in two seasons at Tannadice, leading to a loan move with Preston and eventual free transfer to York City. Mathie left professional football in 2003 for player/manager spells in lower league English football.
