Alessandro Vollero was a New York mobster and a high ranking member of the Brooklyn Camorra crime organization. He served as a lieutenant to Pellegrino Morano during the Mafia-Camorra War of 1916.
On November 6, 1916, Vollero participated in the murders of mob boss Nicholas Morello and Charles Ubriaco. He lured the two Sicilian mafiosi to the Navy Street gang's headquarters, Vollero's Cafe on the pretext of arranging a ceasefire with Morano. When they reached the cafe, Morello and Umbraico were gunned down. Although the murder was successful, the assassins, "Torpedo" Tony Notaro and Ralph Daniello, were eventually apprehended. Daniello agreed to turn states' evidence in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Based on Daniello's testimony, Vollero was convicted of first degree murder with Morano. On June 20, 1918, Vollero was sentenced to death at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York. [1] However, Vollero's sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. During his imprisonment, he became acquainted with future mob turncoat Joe Valachi. Vollero served 14 years before his eventual release on April 28, 1933.
