It is the largest stadium in Syria, and is currently used mostly for football matches. It serves as a home ground of Al-Ittihad. The stadium was opened in 2007 and holds 75,000 spectators.
Al-Ittihad played a friendly match against Fenerbahçe SK of Turkey on 3 April 2007 for the opening of the stadium which ended in a 2-2 draw.
It is considered one of the worlds cleanest and most well-kept stadiums in the world[citation needed]. The president himself has attended the opening of the stadium[citation needed].
