Talk:Albert Henry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry's middle name was Royle, not Royale; I've fixed it. I've also added that he founded the CIP, and the dates of his term as Prime Minister. I've added three Cook Islands-related categories; there weren't any, and Henry was a major figure in Cook Islands politics. Also, there was an Australian biography stub, which I've removed (he wasn't Australian), and replaced (for now) with a "basic" stub. Feel free to put in something more specific.
This article in the French Wikipedia has some useful information. I may translate it if I get round to it (being French myself). My other sources are books, Akono'anga Maori: Cook Islands Culture (Crocombe, M., ed; ISBN 982-02-0348-1) and Nation and Destination: Creating Cook Islands Identity (Sissons, J; ISBN 982-02-0142-X). not sure how to tag this correctly but it seems to me that this page is one-sided.
The "brief account" of Albert Henry's conviction seems to be neither brief nor NPOV. I've flagged it, hopefully someone with more time and resources can track down the details.
- I'm not sure there are many published ressources on Albert Henry's Conviction. The main one is probably his grand son book (see [1]). I wonder if user Puaikura is not himself Henry's grand son ???? Nevers.
[edit] Neutrality?
This has to be the least neutral thing that I have EVER seen. Albert Henry may well have written the article itself. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Versalius (talk • contribs) 19:08, 5 May 2007 (UTC).
As I see it...the purpose of this article about the Criminal Convictions of Albert Henry, is to present the "facts" and the "truth". That is all. To be "neutral", a writer has to write "honestly" and present all the "facts" in a "truthful" mannner. So, is this article is an "honest" account of what happened to Albert Henry who died in 1981? I think it is. So if it is an "honest" account, then I think it is a "neutral" account. In some cases : "Fact is far more intriguing...than what fiction could ever be." And this is one of those cases. Puaikura
- I find this article honest and interesting. Nevertheless would'nt it be better to create a dstinct article on the "fly-in voters scandal" and consequences and improve this one concerning the life of Albert Henry, his background, political career...Nevers
- How could Albert Henry have written this article when he died over 20 years ago? 125.236.174.162 11:17, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fly-in voters Scandal
Resonding to Nevers previous comment... For the March 1978 General Election, both the Democratic Party and Albert Henry and the Cook Islands Party subsidised and flew in their own supporters from New Zealand on special charter flights. Standing alone, those actions were not illegal in terms of the Cook Islands Electoral Act 1966. Both political parties did exactly the same thing. However, when it came to the Electoral Court Hearings, subsequent to the March 1978 General Election, the Electoral Court only considered the Cook Islands Party fly-in voter scheme. The Electoral Court refused to give any consideration to the Democratic Party fly-in voter scheme. The Electoral Court subsequently determined that the Democratic Party subsidised fly-in voter scheme was legal. But the Cook Islands Party fly-in voter scheme (same-same) constituted bribery. So all the C.I.P. fly-in votes were declared invalid which resulted in 8 C.I.P. candidates, including Albert Henry, loosing their seats in the 22-member seat of the Cook Islands Parliament. This resulted in the Democratic Party winning the General Election and so there was a change of Government. Albert Henry was never charged, nor was he ever convicted, for any offence under the Cook Islands Electoral Act 1966 such as bribery, electoral fraud, vote rigging or any thing like that. He was wrongfully conviced of other crimes, but in terms of the 1978 General Election, Albert Henry has no criminal convictions against his name. Regarding a separate article concerning the "Fly-in voter Scandal". That is possible. Regarding another article on the life of Albert Henry, his background, political career. That is also possible. Finally...while the American multi-millionare Finbar Kenny subsidised and paid for the C.I.P. fly-in voters from New Zealand...from his own pocket - the question is asked : "Who paid for the Democratic Party fly-in voter scheme? More than NZ$50,000 to Air Nauru for two charter flights. Answer : It was the Cook Islands tax-payer. It was almost 3 months following the change of Government of July 1978, that the New Democratic Party Government illegally laundered "Cook Islands Government money" from the Cook Islands Tourist Authority which eventually found it's way to Air Nauru to pay for the Democratic Party fly-in voter scheme. The Democratic Party of that time...got away with this corruption. But Albert Henry - he got "screwed". Puaikura
- I've just read your message. Thanks for the explanation. That's much more clear for me now. It would be a great idea if you could write a good article on Albert Henry. It seems that you know the subject very well. After all, with his autobiography, the life of Tom Davis is quite well known. The one of Albert Henry, much less (I mean outside Cook Islands). It would be my pleasure to translate it in the french wikipedia. Kia manuia Nevers
