Albireo (アルビレオ Arubireo?) is a character of CyberConnect 2 and Bandai's .hack franchise. He is the main character of the first volume of the novel .hack//AI buster, which is told from his point of view, and also a central character in the second volume. He makes a cameo appearance in the manga .hack//Legend of the Twilight.
In the MMORPG The World, Albireo is a powerful Long Arm character class (he was mistranslated by Tokyopop as a "Pole Arm" in .hack//AI buster) who mostly keeps to himself as a solo-player. In real life, Albireo is Kazushi Watarai, a system administrator/debugger working for CC Corporation. As a debugger, his job is to work out any glitches in the game, as well as delete any system anomalies (such as Vagrant AIs).

[edit] History
[edit] .hack//AI buster
In the beginning of the novel, Albireo is a fairly hardened system administrator who believes he knows more or less of The World inside-out. Even so, his love of the game remains undiminished. As the story progresses, he begins to realize that his knowledge of the game is not as broad as he had once thought as he peers into the very core of The World.
As his job entails, he is sent to delete a Vagrant AI in the cathedral of an area known as Naval of Lake (Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground) as the leader of the Cobalt Brigade, a group of system moderators. Though he has seemingly done this countless times before, something about this case seems off and the AI escapes.
Later, as Albireo, he meets the AI once again, who does not recognize him (no indication is given that he recognises her either; the reader is not informed that the Cobalt Brigade leader and Albireo are the same person till the end of the novel). From that point on, the AI, whose name is revealed to be Lycoris, has Albireo track down pieces of her data (her voice, eyes, etc.). Along the way, he meets Hokuto, a newbie Wavemaster and a pair of Blademasters, Balmung and Orca (neither play particularly important roles in the novels, although the origin of their titles as Descendants of Fianna is revealed). As his quest continues, he witnesses the two Blademasters defeat The One Sin event, an event so difficult, it was said to be impossible to conquer. As an indirect result of this victory, Albireo gains the last of Lycoris' data fragments and leads her (and Hokuto) to where everything started: the cathedral in Naval of Lake. There, he gives Lycoris the final data fragment, which contains her memory, fully prepared to delete her when Lycoris has become complete. However, when he witnesses a strange event, a fragment of Lycoris' memory, and partially comes to realize Lycoris' reason for existence, he becomes hesitant. In the end, however, Lycoris forces him to delete her.
[edit] .hack//AI buster 2
Albireo appears once again in .hack//AI buster 2 in the only story that is a direct sequel to the original novel, "Wotan's Spear". In this story, which takes place during the first four episodes of .hack//Sign, Albireo chases after Tsukasa. When he takes action, Macha stops him and causes Albireo to fall into a coma.[1]
Once he leaves the hospital, several months later (after the events in the .hack//Games), he is forced to resign from CC Corporation as he is labelled as the one who caused the Twilight Incident. He then meets up with the person behind Hokuto, Haruka Mizuhara, and it is implied they begin a relationship and to live together.[1]
[edit] .hack//Legend of the Twilight
Albireo makes a cameo appearance in the manga. He appears on two separate occasions, both in flashbacks and both in the same volume (volume three). Here, it is shown that he was a mentor and predecessor to the character Kamui, the current leader of the Cobalt Knights.
