Albemarle High School is a public high school serving grades 9 through 12, the largest of the Albemarle County Public Schools located in the Jack Jouett District, just outside Charlottesville, Virginia. Albemarle High School was founded in 1953. The current principal is Dr. Matthew Haas, also known as "The Docta", who was appointed in 2004 following the retirement of Lawrence A. Lawwill.
Albemarle High School receives all students from Sutherland Middle School, and some from Jack Jouett Middle School and Burley Middle School.
The main building includes many science labs, two computer labs, a media center, a full auditorium, rooms for the band and choir, art rooms, a photography lab, a cafeteria, and two gymnasiums.
Albemarle High School is abound with honors, Advanced Placement, and dual enrollment classes through nearby Piedmont Virginia Community College.
On the school grounds is stadium with a track encircling a field used for football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse. Sports fields are also available for baseball and tennis. Sports offered include golf, swimming, indoor and outdoor track and field, football, soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, cross-country, field hockey, wrestling, tennis, lacrosse, and softball.
The school colors are red and blue and the athletic teams are called the Patriots. Albemarle competes in the Commonwealth District, Northwest Region, and Group AAA of the Virginia High School League. The Albemarle Players and Albemarle forensics team also competes in the Commonwealth District; the Forensics competition was purpose of founding the VHSL (Virginia High School League).
NFL kicker Nick Novak graduated from Albemarle in 2000, and University of Virginia head coach Al Groh started his career in 1967 as an assistant coach at the school. Former NFL linebacker Eric Wilson is the coach of the JV boys' basketball team. Noted Latin and Greek teacher David "Doc" Larrick retired in 2007 after teaching at Albemarle for 25 years.
Adult Education and GED programs are offered in the evening. Facilities are available to the community. Nearby schools include Greer Elementary School and Jack Jouett Middle School.
