Alan Wearne
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alan Wearne (born 1948) is an Australian poet.
Alan Wearne was born and grew up in Melbourne.[1] He studied history at Monash University where he met the poets Laurie Duggan and John A. Scott. Having published two collections of poetry he branched out into the verse novel with The Nightmarkets, published in 1986 which won the Banjo Award and has been adapted for performance.
He has since continued with the verse novel form despite distinctly uncooperative publishers. Penguin only published half of his next book, The Lovemakers, in 2001, refused to promote it and pulped most of the run despite its winning the Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry, and the Arts Queensland Judith Wright Calanthe Award.[2] The second half was published in 2004 by the ABC as The Lovemakers: Book Two, Money and Nothing. Book 2 co-won The Foundation for Australian Literary Studies’ Colin Roderick Award and H T Priestly Medal. The book has since been pulped.
Alan Wearne's latest work, "The Australian Popular Songbook" was published in 2008 by Giramondo Publishing in early 2008.
Wearne now lectures in creative writing at the University of Wollongong.
