- That won't work. These streams work via the rtsp protocol, and a new rtsp:// URL is generated every time you're trying to view a subscription stream. A newly generated rtsp URL can only be used once, after which it becomes invalid. In order to get a valid rtsp URL you need to sign in with your realplayer subscription password -- signing in will get you some sort of cookie so you don't have to sign in again in order to get a new rtsp URL on subsequent Realplayer launches. Suffice to say that only one cookie per subscription will be valid, so if you're paying for one subscription, you really can watch the stream on just one computer at a time. The free low quality stream is another matter. It always generates the same rtsp URL. It is also possible to avoid the timeout on the free stream if you know how to use vi or similar. So you've got every option to properly familiarize yourself with the channel, but if you really end up watching it you really should subscribe. Don't be a freeloader.

That it's now theoretically available to a number of customers which is only behind BBC and CNN (if these individuals chose to actually view it, which most of them currently don't)? - I have to say that I'm quite sure that a substantial portion of those people who have either the BBC or CNN channels available to them do not actually view the programming, though I agree that the specific criteria used in determining the channel's 'stature' ought to be included if it is going to be grouped with the other two channels. But seriously...what criteria do you suggest we use for determining who the 'biggest' channels are? And whose data should we rely on? The number of people the channel is "now theoretically available to" is closer to 6.5 billion than 80 million. See here. Satellite signal offer not available in Hawaii, Alaska, Antarctica, Greenland and parts of the Far Eastern Federal District. Fees may apply. Void where prohibited by law. And here are some additional facts:
- Al Jazeera (Arabic) is the most widely viewed and trusted news source in the Middle East.
- There are about 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide.
- There are about 354 million first, and 150 million–1.5 billion second language English speakers worldwide.
Al Jazeera English may be underrepresented in the USA, but 80 million worldwide sounds plausible to me. If you can prove that Al Jazeera English viewers are not really watching but CNN and BBC viewers really are watching, go ahead.

- For the record, the initially used logo was Image:Aljazeerainternational.gif. It had been added by User:MEA707. When that logo was added, the channel was still expected to get named Al Jazeera International (the change to the actual name Al Jazeera English was done one day prior to launch).
- Later, User:Sohailstyle changed that logo to Image:logo_aljazeera.jpg (a stylised version of the Arabic Al Jazeera logo without any English words).
- Subsequent to that, Eve215454 changed the Image:logo_aljazeera.jpg logo to a screenshot logo (Image:Logo_aljazeeraenglish.PNG) which includes both the sylised Arabic Al Jazeera logo and the English word "ALJAZEERA", exactly as broadcast by Al Jazeera English. Eve215454 then added this comment:
Although AJE has the same logo with the Al Jazeera Arabic, AJE's Logo has the "Al Jazeera" word below the corporate logo. I have changed the logo, it came from a TV Screenshot.

- Some time later, User:70.225.184.51, changed the logo back to Image:Aljazeerainternational.gif. This prompted another user to write this:

I've uploaded the newhour ident. However due to the long list of services on which AJE is available it is not in the best place in the article (programmes). What do people think of this?

- AJE is not known as JSC. Al Jazeera may have used the JSC nomer in the past, but AJE never has.
- Apart from a slew of Middle Eastern advertisers, AJE has carried ads for Shell, Sony, Nokia, Casino Royale/Omega, Tissot & others.
- AFAIK Al Manaar is Arabic, not English.

I've been looking for some time now, but there isn't a single HD DVB-S or DVB-S2 broadcast of Al Jazeera English available in the EU. Even sites like KingOfSat's HDTV channels page doesn't list it. - The high-definition television claim was very widely reported throughout the press. ;-) Just fucking google it :-) and you should be spoilt for choice for a source. I don't have HDTV, and I haven't a clue why you can't get ahold of a HDTV signal, but my theory would be that while Al Jazeera English is working entirely in HDTV, most of their distributors possibly may not be ready yet to send that HDTV goodness your way. If you're a really eager beaver you could of course email the kingofsat.net people or contact Al Jazeera English (the distribution.int email address is what I would pick) and try to get a reply straight from the horse's mouth. :) Lyngsat also has contact and satellite details.
- PS: If you find out good info, it would be cool if you could contribute that to the Availability section. :)

- Thanks for telling me to justfuckinggoogleit, but I'm already aware of the claim Al Jazeera English made. The problem is that the claim doesn't hold up. Looking to the Lyngsat HD-page, none of the satellites' pages listed (yes, even those broadcasting outside the EU) make mention of Al Jazeera or Al Jazeera English. It can very well be that they use HD-hardware in-house (as do many other oranizations, like the BBC, National Geographic and German broadcasters), they do not broadcast that signal. That's the reason I feel that Al Jazeera English is not "... the first global high-definition television network", as mentioned in the top of the article. - There obviously are two options: Either these 3rd party webpages haven't updated their info yet (AJE is still fairly new), or there indeed is no HDTV signal available anywhere. In either case, it seems to me that this one again runs down to calling up or emailing Al Jazeera themselves. Only they can give you a really authoritative answer to your question. When I referenced the HDTV claims in my contributions to the article, I relied on the assumption that all these major media organisations who reported that claim had done their homework, and unless proven otherwise that's still my assumption because there's no dearth of sources and if I were to discount all sources of equal or less caliber than, say, the International Herald Tribune, etc. etc. then I'd have to discount probably around 95% of sources given in all Wikipedia articles. If you want to dig deeper, the onus really is on you prove oherwise. To that end it's probably best to just phone Al Jazeera and see what they say. I'm not Al Jazeera (much as I'd probably like working for them). The 3rd party websites and sources are not Al Jazeera. It looks like only Al Jazeera can give you you a definite answer as to where you can get a HDTV signal, or if you can't, what they base their HDTV claim on. Good luck, and please contribute back what you find out, preferably with sources. :)

- KingOfSat and Lyngsat are right on the mark in all occasions I've encountered. Apart from that, Al Jazeera English states on which satellites they broadcast. The mentioned transponders do not carry HD-channels. After scanning the transponders mentioned under "European Coverage", it is clear they are all DVB-S carrying a standard 4:2:0 PAL signal, not HD. 194.109.22.148 16:55, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- I think your edit to the article was probably a good compromise and probably born out by the sources/facts we currently have.
- However, I have a bit of additional info:
- I have taken out the $6 USD Realplayer susbscription and with it, I have two streams available to chose from: a 320 kbps stream (which to me looks like regular TV quality) and a 500 kbps stream (which presumably looks better but which I can't watch because my PC is too underpowered for that). Again, I don't really have a clue about HDTV, but would the 500 kbps stream be considered HDTV? Does anyone know what quality the other online streaming providers (VDC/JumpTV) offer and whether they're HDTV?

- 'Bureaux' is correct. However, 'bureaus' is also correct. Both forms are in popular use. (Google currently returns 1,130,000 hits for an English-language only search of "bureaux" and 1,190,000 hits for an English-language only search of "bureaus" (but Google doesn't really seem to distinguish between both forms).)
- The "bureaux" plural form entered the English lexicon from/via the French language and I guess by using it you're being a card-carrying traditionalist. I have an unconfirmed hunch that "bureaus" is more common in the US and "bureaux" is more common in the rest of the English speaking world. I like "bureaux" better, and since the article uses British English, I reckon it's nicer to leave it at "bureaux". (Remember, in the Eternal Wikipedia War between the American and English languages®™, the truce was to keep articles in the language they were started in and/or what's most commonly used in that article.)

Do Triangle TV really rebroadcast various programmes (as in "segment of programming", eg. selected shows, news bulletins, etc.) or do they rebroadcast one or more of the Al Jazeera network's eight TV channels?
If they rebroadcast shows: which ones?
If they rebroadcast TV channels, which ones? (This article is about Al Jazeera English, not about any of the other Al Jazeera channels.)
Also, is the rebroadcasting done live (e.g. retransmission of the live signal), or is it actual rebroadcasting of content at a later date?
Any help much appreciated. :)
