Al Taubenberger is a Republican politician from Northeast Philadelphia. He was the Republican candidate for mayor of Philadelphia in 2007, losing decisively to Michael Nutter.[1]
A child of German immigrants, Taubenberger was raised in Philadelphia's Burholme neighborhood.[2] His first job was as grounds supervisor at Friends Hospital.[2] He later held staff jobs for Republican Congressman Charles F. Dougherty in the early 1980s and later for two City Council members, Democrat Joan Krajewski and Republican Jack Kelly. He ran for Congress in 2002 and 2004, losing the Republican primary to Melissa Brown both times.[3] He received 17% of the vote in the 2007 mayoral election, losing every ward in the city.[4] Following the election, Taubenburger offered to help Nutter in any way he can, and said he and his former opponent planned to talk again soon.[5]
Taubenberger is also president of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and the founder and president of the Burholme Civic Association and Town Watch.[3]
