Al Seeger (born January 23, 1980 in Savannah, Georgia) is a boxer from the United States. At 5'9 with a 73" reach, Seeger is large for his division of 122 lbs. Seeger began boxing at age eleven under the guidance of Mike Jarrell Sr. and Jimmy Chumley of Jarrell's Gym Boxing in Savannah, GA. With his first amateur fight on March 22, 1991, Seeger fought several times in the 80lb weight division. As an amateur Seeger compiled a record of 26-6 capturing several junior Olympic and open division titles, finishing his amateur career in the 125lb division.
Under the alias of "The Quiet Storm", Seeger made his professional debut on April 27, 2002, under the continued banner of Jarrell's Promotions. As a professional, Seeger has complied a record of 27-2 (21ko, and has appeared on such networks as ESPN2, Telefutura, HBO, and Showtime. On September 2, 2005 Seeger captured the International Boxing Association's super bantam weight world title. His most recent, successful defense of the IBA world title was a 2nd round tko on 7-28-06 against former Mexican Olympian, César Morales.
His first loss was on May 29, 2004 against journeyman Phillip Payne. Seeger succumbed to heat exhaustion after an alleged bout with intestinal problems. In the tenth round, of the 100+ degree outdoor venue, "a severely dehydrated Seeger collapsed onto the mat". Seeger was hospitalized and subsequently suspended for several months. Rebounding from his loss, Seeger then gained career best win over current IBF featherweight champion, Erik Aiken on 9-16-04.
Seeger was able to regain the IBA Americas title against "the pitbull", Luis Rivera on 10-30-04 in a twelve round "slug fest". Seeger fought several more times before a rematch with Payne was accepted, then on 4-14-06 he avenged his loss by way of 4th round tko.
A unification bout between Seeger and WBO champion Daniel Ponce de Leon was scheduled for 10-21-06 in El Paso, Texas. The much anticipated fight ended with Seeger losing by tko in the 8th round. This dissapointing performance was described by Seeger as a culmination of poor prepetory decisions and ultimately, "a bad night". Seeger still believes he should have defeated de Leon and wants very much another chance to do so. In speaking with Seeger, he explains his current position as difficult. He believes that he is not getting the respect he deserves, but states that none of the top ranked fighters in his division will agree to box against him.
Al Seeger recently expressed his desire to fight Celestino Caballero, which he looks to as the next best thing to de Leon. Caballero is the current WBA champion and the only fighter to have a professional win over de Leon. Seeger believes that fighting Caballero will provide him with the best route back to Ponce de Leon.
