Akurana

Akurana a town nestled between two major cities, Kandy and Matale, in Sri Lanka. Geographically, it is surrounded by hills and rivers. Pinga Oya is the main river stream which cuts through the town. Majority of the population are Muslims (Sri Lankan Moors)

According to Sri Lankan history, this city was presented to the Muslim community by a Sinhalese King for bravery and support of Muslim men in war.

The ancestors of the Akurana Muslims are, it is told, the Arabs who came to Sri Lanka known by them Serendip. The Arabs came as traders of spices and gemstone.

It is a very notable fact that you cant find a single liquor bar in Akurana.

Akurana has quite a few popular muslim schools in the country including Azhar College, which has a rich history spanning over a century.
