In Hinduism, Akupara is a tortoise who carries the world on his back. It upholds the earth and the sea.

- The Discworld series of novels by Terry Pratchett take place on a fictional world on the back of a giant turtle.
- In Stephen King's Dark Tower series, a guardian of an energy beam supporting the Dark Tower. It had this poem dedicated to it:
