Akupara

In Hinduism, Akupara is a tortoise who carries the world on his back. It upholds the earth and the sea.

  • The Discworld series of novels by Terry Pratchett take place on a fictional world on the back of a giant turtle.
  • In Stephen King's Dark Tower series, a guardian of an energy beam supporting the Dark Tower. It had this poem dedicated to it:
See the TURTLE of enormous girth!
On his shell he holds the earth.
His thought is slow but always kind;
He holds us all within his mind.
"On his back all vows are made;
He sees the truth but mayn't aid.

  • In the Secrets of Droon series, the magical city of Tortu is located on the back of a giant turtle, also called Tortu.
