Telekom Malaysia International Bangladesh (TMIB) Limited is a joint venture between Telekom Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. of Malaysia (70%) and a local company A. K. Khan & Company Ltd (30%). AKTEL launched its operations on the 15 November, 1997 in Dhaka and in 26 March, 1998 in Chittagong. Its founding chairman was Late Mr. Zahiruddin Khan, an ex-commerce minister.
AKTEL has now become the third largest mobile phone operator in Bangladesh in terms of revenue and subscribers (7.45 million as of March, 2008) unable to hold its 2nd position due to fierce competition from Banglalink who is more aggressive in the market with huge investments from parent company Orascom Telecom [1].
AKTEL boasts of the widest international roaming service in the market, connecting 315 operators across 170 countries. It is the first operator in the country to introduce GPRS to its subscribers. AKTEL uses GSM 900 MHz standard.

Aktel uses the following numbering scheme for its subscribers:
+880 N1N2N3N4N5N6N7N8
Where, 880 is the International subscriber dialling code for Bangladesh.
18 is the access code for AKTEL as assigned by the Government of Bangladesh. Omitting +880 will require to use 0 in place of it instead to represent local call, hence 018 is the general access code.
N1N2N3N4N5N6N7N8 is the subscriber number.

AKTEL offers different packages for their customers' choice. In addition to offering the fundamental pre-paid and post-paid mobile services, AKTEL offers a wide range of value added products and Services to its customers, including, GPRS, mobile data services, Infotainment Services such as SMS banking, Caller Ring Back Tone, Ringtones download, Screen Saver, Picture Message, MMS contents, Voice Greetings and Local Language messaging.. AKTEL is the first operator to provide the partner SIM named AKTEL-JOY to ensure minimum call rates for couples.

In late 2007, Aktel had been fined Tk. 1.45 billion for its involvement in the illegal use of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or call termination business. by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
